Thomas E. Smith

Hanover, Pa.

Tom, his wife, Genelle, and their “fox red” British Labrador live in Hanover. They have two sons and one grandson. Their son, Dr. Scott A. Smith, graduated from Penn State, received his masters degree from Temple, and his doctorate from Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology. He has his own Clinical Psychology practice in Hyannis, MA. Their son, Tobiah (Toby), E. Smith received his EE degree from Johns Hopkins and a masters degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh. He is a Principal Software Engineer at Laurel Networks in Pittsburgh.

Tom retired from the Glatfelter Company after 42 years of service. He was a manager in their Inside Sales Department and Superintendent of the Finishing Division. Genelle retired in 1998 after 28 years with ESAB where she was the Supervisor Salary & Pension Administration. Tom’s hobbies are hunting (geese, ducks, small and big game), and reloading , “I reload all the bullets I use to shoot big game.” In the 1970’s, Tom coached the “Ponies” football team for the Spring Grove Boy’s Club, and currently, “we help out as needed at various organizations in the community.”

He feels the education we received at EHS was better than that available from today’s public high schools, and Mary Menges got his vote for most effective teacher.

Tom and Genelle have traveled widely, “Florida, Mississippi, North Carolina, Cape Cod and all points in between. Following retirement, we took a nine day sailing trip in the British Virgin Islands on a private sailing boat with our son, Scott, as captain (our retirement gift from Scott and his wife).”

He sometimes longs for the good old days when, “Life was slower and we used pencil and paper instead of instant messaging.”

Tom is proud of … “Fathered and raised two wonderful young men who are very successful in their jobs and are very happy with their families. What more could you ask for?”

He served in the Army National Guard, was recognized as Trainee of the Cycle in basic training, received the award for best marksman, and qualified for OCS on the recommendation of the Commanding General of the U.S. Armor Training Center at Fort Knox.
