Kathryn (Kessler) Spangler
Hanover, Pa.
Kathryn, who is a widow, lives in Hanover. She has two children, five grandchildren and one great granddaughter ! She worked as a bookkeeper and is now retired. Her late husband, Jay, was a self employed cabinet maker. They met at the Pleasant Hill Carnival in July of 1958. Her hobby is, “I like to piece block quilt tops when I have the time.” She does volunteer work for her church.
She sometimes thinks of the good old days and she liked the slower pace and less traffic of the 50’s and 60’s.
Kathryn is proud of raising two sons and taking care of her family, and later in life having the enjoyment from five grandchildren, and even later, the birth of a great granddaughter.
Her message to her classmates is …
“My sister and I grew up on a farm where we raised lots of hogs and chickens. We had a large garden and truck patch where we raised and canned or froze nearly all our own vegetables and meats. We moved off the farm about a year before I got married. After about thirteen years of marriage, my husband and I bought a thirteen acre field and built a small farmette where we raised our own animals for meat and vegetables for canning and freezing. I also raised a lot of my own plants for transplanting into the garden. I also dried a lot of my own seeds for planting the following years.”
“After my husband passed away in 2001, I discontinued raising animals and also gave up gardening. Over the years I helped my husband in his cabinet shop where he did sub-contract work, as well as making custom cabinets for private customers. I also worked as a bookkeeper for a few companies over the years.”
“I love the old time country music and bluegrass music.”
